I wrote this as my response to ELECTION but thought it wouldn't be appropriate on that forum so I created another post.
I'm going to say no. I think it's a cute film. And not that a cute film couldn't be a part of The Canon but in this case I don't like it enough. But I haven't seen it for a while.
I LOVE The Canon. I love listening to both of you for all your disagreements and banter and especially the nice rare moments of united agreement. But honestly guys, I think we're doing a bit of white-man washing when it come to our Canon here. I'm not trying to be cynical, and I'm not even trying to be timely with this whole Oscar thing happening it's just something that's been on my mind and I need to say it. I look forward to the Canon every week and I can't help feel a little disappointment when a film like this is brought up. And I know you both can only go so fast. But I just watched KILLER OF SHEEP and those are the things we need to be nominating and bringing to the light. You talk about historical importance (which fuck that) but if that is important enough to you there is amazing work historically that was screaming in the face of the norm and I know you both know about these movies and probably would love or already do love them. Not trying to be a downer and I should just probably say this in a separate post as it's not related to the movie above but I feel it relevant enough.
I don't want this to come off as cynical because I love both of you but can't help feel this way. Let's subvert the typical nominations of cinephiles. But I guess Devin can't help the movies he loves and wants to fight for them so I get it. I'm gonna stop before I go on.
I understand that you disagree with some of the movies they are choosing, but to claim "whitewashing" you should have some solid reasons. Also, I'm coincidentally listening to the podcast for Battle Royale, which does not have a white man in it at all.
What is "white-man washing"?
I disagree with your opinion of election, but I would love to see them nominate Killer of Sheep.
I also apologize for the title of this post it's way to dramatic.
