I really adore this film. Mixes drama with thriller elements on top of making a foreign setting and people, who are usually demonized in the west, so relatable and human. The dichotomy between middle class and impoverished citizens' religiosity in a country where sharia law makes life so difficult for everyone hasn't been done this well, or at all, really. I'm not a fan of THE PAST, and I enjoyed ABOUT ELLY well enough, but A SEPARATION is the real deal. Only minor gripe I had with the film was that the women wore their hijabs in the house, since it was shot and would be distributed in Iran. Realistically, Iranian women don't wear chadors or hijabs in the privacy of their own homes, 'cause that's ridiculous.
