Both of these belong in the Canon. Almost unfair to compare them to each other. Each is a masterpiece!

Tough choice, but I think that ET has to make it in over Close Encounters, simply because ET (because of its simplicity) will probably have appeal even 50 years down the road, whereas Close Encounters seems like it won't age quite as well. Also, I recommend that y'all draw up a list of the movies that made it in and link it to the show's page; would be great for newcomers to the show.

Well, ET is terrible, so Close Encounters gets it by default.

Both great films, watching Cluse Encounters right now. However, forced to choose, I go with ET because it affects me more on an emotional level.
