Star Wars vs. The Empire Strikes Back

Listen

Devin & Amy clash lightsabers in the first ever versus episode where they will decide which Star Wars movie belongs in the canon. The prequels don't even deserve to be in the running. Instead they will only focus on the original trilogy. Is Han & Leia's banter romantic or annoying? Is C-3PO more lovable by being a dick? Can Empire's bleakness balance out its lack of plot? Tune in for the death match -- and head to the forums on Wolfpop to cast the deciding vote!

Star Wars - it started it all and while i love Empire too, I agree it was never as great as that.

Amy has a good point about Leia, who is in fact this smart, capable savvy leader in a rebellion; but in so much of the Star Wars franchise she's just "some chick" who needs saving. I think this proves (and the prequels confirm) that Lucas just can't write a realistic female character.

C-3po is in a lot of ways the worst part of Empire, Devin's right about that. He's often just this whining machine whose sole purpose in so many scenes is a comic relief. For example the part in the asteroid where Leia and Han are about to kiss, and C-3po pops his head around to tell them he fixed some part of the ship; he's like some annoying kid saying "ohhh ohh ohhh look at me!" and it ruins the tension of the moment. C-3po is the Jar Jar of the original trilogy; albeit C-3po is a better character.

I'm going to go with Empire as the better film, but by a very slim margin.

Yay Star Wars! Nay Empire. This is the first episode to change my mind. It's hard to get past the argument that Empire doesn't feel like a complete film. I imagine the Canon as one of those 80s time capsules we will one future day open up, discover Empire, then say what the hell is this... are we missing something?

Oh man, I'd love to hear Amy and Devin tackling A.I. Artificial Intelligence given their different approaches to the anthropomorphization of robots. That sounds like an intense discussion waiting to happen.

This show is exactly one hell of a lot of fun. Keep up the good work!

Also, one of the most damning quotes about any director "Lucas misunderstands his own movies so much." It hurts because it's true.

I am confused. Are you a couple of wanna be movie critics in high school who have not yet had enough experience in life to appreciate movies or our you doing a podcast for junior high school students? You are both annoying. The concept is interesting, but all you do is argue, not discuss the merits of the movie in a respectful way. The guy, his voice is ok for radio, or pod casting, but the woman voice is grating, like fingers on a chalk board. Having said that, and only having been able to listen to two episodes because for some reason they are not always available to listen too, which I assume is a wolf pop issue, Goodfella's is an amazing movie. What you need to remember about the wife is that it is the late 60's, early 70's in a part of the country that is still living life as if they were still in the fifties. So while the rest of the country is giving more and more power to women, that part of the world still treats their woman as "less than". This is why it is so import

When you both said you wish they didn't make another one after original, you completely lost me. And i disagree with you both on many things, at the same time as i agree with Devin on multiple points. But i am totally out of touch with Amy. Oh well, i still love her voice. Even though sometimes she uses her beutiful speech to say ridiculus things like in this episode. But i can't blame her. It was obvious she had no clue about the original trilogy. Not everyone in the world should love and/or appreciate Star Wars i guess. Personally i think both films undoubtedly should be in the canon. First film is masterpiece, as well as second. Second film is probably the best in the series, but my personal favorite formed throughout the years and it's Return of Jedi, though i realize there is no place in the canon for this film. I still love it wholeheartedly.

I agree with Devin. Economics impacts movie theater sales. Instead of going to the movies as a date for 10 dollars, its easily doubled in that time. It costs too much to watch movies that frequently. Instead of going 15 times a year, now I go 4 and wait for VOD/Netflix/Amazon Instant.
